Meryl Truett's workshop

Just a delayed posting for the piece which my daughter Chloe made in Meryl's workshop this summer. She mounted it on an old trivet and it now proudly hangs in our kitchen.

Last days for Out of the South

Today I was greeted by a small beautiful arrangement given to us by Studley Flower Gardens here in Rochester. Check out their site - (created by us here at artstream) it's full of beautiful plants and flowers along with ideas for what they can do with your landscaping! Thanks Molly for the beautiful arrangement!

Out of the South has been a wonderful show this summer, big thanks to Meryl Truett who curated and all the artists who were a dream to work with. Truly great! We are looking towards our fall schedule here and next up in September is Play/Art/Toy - stay tuned for some peeks from this fun filled show! Here's to a last blast of summer this weekend, enjoy!

Old Faithful Shop

I am already feeling the nip in the air and wanting to bring outside inside for the (winter) next seasons - whispering that word ever so softly so summer doesn't hear! So, how beautiful would this large size hanging terrarium look in my house? Extremely so. Get one here at this incredible place in Vancouver called Old Faithful Shop

My book cover reveal!

Here it is on the promotional postcard Quarry made... It's a big step to the finish line and I couldn't be happier with the cover. Busy hands in the studio today - we are setting up a brand new clay and 3D studio so there will be no more mixing clay with watercolor or vice versa! Pretty exciting too that we will also have a second 2D studio finished when classes open up on September 12th. (scroll down on that last link to find a hilarious photo from an art birthday party!!) Have you taken a look at what we are offering this year? Click through to view... and hurry - Adult Clay class is filling fast!

Summer weddings

.... in simple settings are the most romantic, beautiful events ever ...
Our good friends got married last night in their backyard, which has beautiful wild gardens and backs up to a stand of trees. Rainer took photos for them and this shot gives you an overview of the pretty site. The tables were set with her mom's Wedgewood plates and blue eggs in little nests, hydrangeas and pretty hand embroidered napkins. It was intimate and special in every way.

What did the mail carrier bring ...

It was a great week away - and it's always like a holiday when you return to new goodies in the gallery. We have some new glass in from Heather Palmer in the beautiful new color aqua - and some Smart Glass jewelry which we have admired for years and decided to finally take the plunge and carry. The above necklace is made from recycled sake bottles and could not be any prettier. There are matching earrings too. So beautiful and as always, one of a kind!

Hollyhocks!, a photo by artstreamstudios on Flickr.

A sunny shot of our hollyhocks in our backyard... away for a few days resting our brains and recharging our batteries. August is such a beautiful moth to do that in, don't you think? Working up some new ideas too ...

August song

all time favorite, Diana's Baths
the beautiful river at the Inn
happy, though we don't look it...
top of Cathedral Ledge, prior to three climbers popping over the face to greet us!
on the top of Mt Washington - clear day 6288ft.

So, a few days have passed.. my birthday did too, including a special weekend away with my love and a whole lot of back to nature time. Just what was needed! Swiming for an entire day in a river was the grandest of luxuries I could imagine. The bonus was being surrounded by mountains and sheer quiet. bliss!
But back to work and luckily for me, I love that a lot. The last week of summer classes is always a fun time, this summer was no exception! Everyone worked so hard and the process was exciting to all and the results were delightful.
We just finished rounding out our Fall/Winter/Spring 2011-12 so that should be posting up on our site right here today.
Don't forget to stop by our Art Stroll on Saturday night from 5-7 p.m. as well to see Out of the South! It's jammed with incredible works in a wide variety of media. New little works are coming in this next week too. Stay tuned!

Art Lab for Kids - a first little peek!

So our first pages arrived from Quarry Books and oh - so - exciting to see the photos in the pages with the artwork and the artists all in place. It's been such a wonderful trip. I can't wait to share more with you all here and at facebook. We are making a page for fans and a new website for the book will be unveiled soon too. Stay tuned for more fun with Art Lab for Kids!

Falling in love with art

It always amazes me each time someone decides to buy artwork. It's like a relationship. First they notice the piece. Then they get closer and visit it a few times. They do a little research on the piece. They flirt with the idea of taking it home. It happens that today was one of those days for a few people here at artstream. It was a good day. What did you fall in love with today?

Out of the South : pictures

Our current summer exhibit, here at artstream, has been so enthusiastically received, with people coming in from near and far to view and purchase the work. It's an eclectic mix from the perspective of media, yet the thread which draws it together visually is strong. So here are a few choice angles from my lens to lure you in deeper. All work is available right here too online.

Dorothy the Robot of Oz.

It's end of week Camp photo time! So much fun and beauty. All of the ceramics are in the kiln, but the robots made their way home today. This one is quite large as you can see and took all week to build. Way to go!

Out of the South : words

Tobia Makover

We are getting so excited about our up coming exhibition Out of the South! Meryl Truett curated this wonderful show and I wanted to share this statement with you all today surrounding the talent which will be on display:

Out of the South-curated by Meryl Truett

Out of the South brings together a disparate yet connected group of artists who hail from the environs know as the American South. Meryl Truett is the magnet that brought this assemblage together. While each artist possesses a distinct style and aesthetic, a common thread runs though the intent and content of the work. Truett’s work celebrates a vanishing southern landscape in a unique way. By transferring the images to vintage architectural ceiling tiles, she melds the image and the form to create an evocative object.

Tobia Makover is a Savannah photographer whose work delves into memory and loss. She also employs a photo-based technique mixed with encaustic elements. Marilee Hall comes to the exhibit from Tennessee. A native of North Carolina, Hall’s southern roots run deep through the expressive clay that is her chosen medium. Also working with clay and ceramics is Polly Cook. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Polly now lives in Texas. Her work delves into the realm of the narrative of small town southern life and love. Dorothy Netherland, born in Virginia now living in Charleston, South Carolina also makes use of the narrative and the influence of memory to express her ideas through her paintings on glass. John Dodge Meyer was born in Wisconsin but has made his home in the South for the last 40 years. He works with southern hard woods that have been harvested after storms or removed due to land development. The lathe formed vessels come directly from the southern terrain and speak to the idea of environmental preservation.

Out of the South is a gathering together of art steeped in a love for the land and a reverence for memory and the power of communicating a story through personal visual choices.

Art Fairs

This weekend on Sunday, daughter Chloe packed her wares and headed to Strawberry Banke for her first fully realized (read: all by herself) open air art fair. OK, I did drive and help her set up. But otherwise it was all her. She made jewelry, gocco printed moleskines, her fabulous ceramic wares and a few hand designed clothing articles. Pretty sweet! She did quite well and was very professional with her business cards, printed bags and sweet packaging. She will be back at the open market on July 17th, so if you missed it, stop by on the 17th! Pretty proud here of her... hey - her Etsy shop is opening this week and you can like her on Facebook too!

Introducing some new artists

Bad Antiques by Meryl Truett
It's always exciting to look forward to some beautiful new work in the gallery - and especially when it comes from the curation of people I admire. Meryl Truett has put together our next exhibition which involves a group of artists who are all (as the title hints at) "Out of the South".
I will unveil a little of each of their works over the next two weeks as we prepare for Meryl's visit, her workshops and the new show. Above is a work on antique ceiling tin by Meryl herself.
With the holiday weekend upon us I would remind everyone that we are closed tomorrow and Monday, with all of Monday's classes being held on Friday the 8th at their regular times. Happy weekend!

Studio visit: Megan Bogonovich

No words to describe the incredible workings going on in Megan's studio today. But more little peeks to appear over the summer.
She's working on some big beautiful sculptures which defy explanation right now.
Just think fun. Which is what summer is all about anyway - right? What's fun over there in your world?

Summertime classes begin ...

Sylvia is missing by Molly Bosley available here
Hello Sunday evening, all midsummery and wonderfully warm again! Putting away my warmer blankets, (again), throwing open the windows to let the frog and bird sounds drift though the house makes me feel like this time, Summer is finally going to stay.

Tomorrow at artstream our summer classes begin! It's always exciting to have new and old faces combine in the classroom with short sleeves (no rolling up necessary!) and sometimes the back door flung open to hear the rushing of the river. There is still time to sign up for an evening teen or adult class and a couple of spots in my printmaking class... don't hesitate to phone or email me if you have questions about the classes. And! oh yes - special interest in photography? Meryl Truett will be here on the 15 and 16th of July with two SPECTACULAR workshops! Sign up until 7/6 for her workshops. Check us out on facebook for upcoming events, promotions and news too.

And a little update on my book ... it's almost finished and that is the most exciting news of the day! Of course it's not available until March 2012, but still ... it's coming along! Hopefully I can give you all a little peek at part of it at some point soon.

Illustration Friday : Midsummer night

wistful mixed media 8x8 inches
It's been simply forever since I contributed to IF. So here's my entry for this week's prompt: Midsummer night. I love the sound, the actual play and everything surrounding those words.
It's a cold wet dark day here in NH for the beginning of summer, so I will just imagine for now that a warm summer's evening was coming tonight. Tomorrow we have a lovely troop of Daisies coming to visit the gallery. That should be sunny enough! Enjoy your weekend ...

Coconut Cake

I had to post this link to the best coconut cake I have ever had! Made the above cake for Chloe's birthday and there were nothing but rave reviews by all. Thanks to Kristina from In the Kitchen With at design*sponge, for her pointing me in the right direction of this recipe! Try it, you will be amazed! Double it for two 9 inch layers. I didn't go for the 7 minute frosting but added a vanilla frosting with the unsweetened coconut in between and sprinkled sweetened coconut on top. Seriously delish.

I had to add in this extra shot of the birthday girl exercising her mad sewing skills on her new machine ... she was into the cake for sure, but it was the machine which captured her attention!

and lots of great news on my book (it's coming along nicely!) as well as gearing down from school classes (we had our traditional end of the year exhibition at the RPL) and well, gearing UP for the summer classes ...
!
Bonus time: Last Saturday Art Esprit - the Greater Rochester non profit for literary and visual arts (yes the same name as this blog!)
